GSEP Programme for Selected P1 and P2 Students
Background Information
In 2021, our school PE and Sports Department piloted the Gabrielite Sports Excellence Programmes (GSEP) for selected P3 to P5 boys. GSEP is basically a programme that trains and nurture our more sports-inclined boys in multiple sports over the long term with the aim of giving them the opportunities to represent school and also develop student-athlete disciplines. GSEP has since become one of our school signature programme for those loves sports and show good attributes in it.
Our PE/Sports Teachers and Sports Coaches believe that cross training in different sports is beneficial for the overall physical and sports development of our children. A boy with good athletics training will be a more powerful and competent football/floorball player eventually. A boy trained in basketball will also excel in an agility-based sports like badminton. Cross training also reduces the chance of burn out at a later stage.
So far, our trials have achieved wonderful outcomes. See summary of our National School Games Achievements over the last few years since GSEP was launched in our school below.
The GSEP programme not only allowed our boys and school to achieve sporting honours, it also opened up many doorways for them via the Direct School Admission (Sports) routes to their future secondary schools. Most of our GSEP boys had been invited for trials with many schools wanting to admit them into their schools. In the last few years, many of our GSEP boys have successfully enrolled in schools of their choice under the DSA scheme.
Most of all, we believe that this programme will develop the discipline and character in our boys to become very good student-athletes.
What is required to be in GSEP?
We would like to be upfront with parents and students – GSEP is not an easy programme. This multiple-sports-student-athlete programme will require a lot of sacrifice from your boys. They will be required to train almost every day once they reach P3 and P4. Once they get home, they will need to quickly wash up and complete their homework or study on their own. They have to sleep early and wake up early. There will be little time for them to play or engage with their digital devices during weekdays. They are also required to maintain good grades in their academic subjects, failing which, they will have to stop their sports programme. Parents would have to take a leap of faith by enrolling their children in less academic enrichment/tuition programmes so that they can do more sports in school. They will also have to be willing to arrange their external enrichment programmes outside the daily sports programmes in school.
Selection and Invitation Process
GSEP is a by-invitation programme for P1 and P2 students only. Our PE teachers is already conducting some sports activities during PE lessons now to assess the children’s abilities and aptitudes in sports. This whole process will continue for the rest of semester 1. At the end of semester 1, boys found suitable at that point will be invited onto our GSEP programme. They will than begin training twice a week in Semester 2 on Mondays and Wednesdays (tentative training days), 2.00 to 3.30pm, every school week till the end of the school year. See criteria for selection in the following slides.
What if my son is not selected for GSEP at P1?
GSEP selection does not end at P1. We recognize that boys will grow in their own time. If your son is not selected in P1, please do not be disheartened. Continue to encourage him to play sports if he enjoys sports. Our PE teachers and sports coaches will continue to look out for their development. Once they are ready, we will invite him into the GSEP. We have had boys joining GSEP at P2, P3 and even P4.
